It helps if you include:
- Your browser and version (for example Chrome 130) and your operating system
- What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
- Whether it happens on every page or only one. You do not have to send the page address.
- A screenshot of the Performance tab in the Murmur popup, if reading is slow or choppy
Quick fixes
- Nothing happens on a page. Reload the page after installing or updating Murmur. Murmur only attaches to pages opened afterwards.
- The first read is slow. Murmur is downloading its speech files. This happens the first time.
- I get a message instead of reading. Chrome does not allow extensions on its PDF viewer, browser pages, the Web Store or local files. Murmur says so when that is why.
- Reading stopped by itself. That is deliberate: it stops when you navigate away, the page changes route, or the tab closes.
- Playback stutters. Open the Performance tab for the cause and what to change. Keep the engine on CPU.
- A shortcut does nothing. Check
chrome://extensions/shortcuts. If a command shows as not set, another app or extension uses that combination. - The highlight is missing on a sentence. Murmur finds each spoken sentence in the page's text. If a page changes its text while you listen, that sentence may not be highlighted. Reading is not affected.
Known limits
- The voice speaks English. Text in other languages will not be read well.
- Murmur does not work on Chrome's built-in PDF viewer, browser pages, the Chrome Web Store or local files.
- The player appears in the top frame of a page. Select text works inside embedded frames too.
Support Murmur
Murmur is free. If you find it useful, you can buy a coffee to support its development. This opens a donation page run by a third party. It is optional, and nothing is locked behind it.
