Murmur privacy policy
Last updated: 7 November 2026
Murmur ("the extension") reads web pages aloud. This policy explains what it does with your information. It is short because there is very little to say.
The short version: Murmur does not send the text it reads, your browsing, or anything about you to the developer or to any third party. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Its only network requests are downloads of its speech files from a public file host.
What Murmur reads
When you press Read page or Read selection, or click or select text with Select text, Murmur reads the text of the page, the part you selected, or the element you pointed at, so it can speak it. Murmur never reads page content unless you ask.
That text can include personal information if it is on the page you are viewing. Murmur treats it the same way regardless:
- It is processed in your browser to produce speech. It is not sent anywhere.
- It is held in memory only, so the player can show the current sentence and move to the previous or next one. It is removed when you press Stop, when you start reading something else, when the tab closes, and when you close the browser. It is never written to disk by Murmur.
- It is not logged, copied, or shared with the developer or anyone else.
Murmur does not collect or store your browsing history, the addresses of pages you visit, cookies, form entries, or your location.
What Murmur stores
In your browser only (Chrome's extension storage), never uploaded:
- Settings: your chosen voice, speed, engine and interface language, and the fact that you accepted the first-run notice.
- Player and Select text, per tab: whether the on-page player and Select text are on for each open tab. This lives in memory for the browser session.
Uninstalling Murmur deletes all of this.
The downloads
The first time you read something, Murmur downloads its speech files (about 90 MB in total) from huggingface.co, a public file-hosting service run by a third party. The first time you use each voice, it downloads one more small file (under 1 MB) for that voice from the same place. Your browser keeps the files so they are not downloaded again.
These are ordinary web requests for fixed files. They contain nothing from the pages you read, and the files are data: Murmur does not run them as code. As with any download, the host can see your IP address and standard request details such as your browser type. Hugging Face's own privacy policy governs what it does with that. You can remove the stored files by clearing the extension's site data or uninstalling Murmur.
Performance tab
The Performance tab shows how busy your computer is (processor and memory use, and battery state where Chrome provides it) so it can explain choppy speech and suggest fixes. These numbers are read and displayed locally. They are not stored or transmitted.
Support link
The popup has an optional "Buy a coffee" button that links to a donation page on Buy Me a Coffee, a third-party service. It opens in a new tab only if you click it, and Murmur sends nothing when you do. Anything you do on that site is covered by its own privacy policy. The About tab also links to the developer's website, 76softwares.in, and has "Contact support" and "Email us" links (the support page, or your own email app); they work the same way, and Murmur attaches nothing to them. If you email us, we receive what you choose to write. Murmur does not require or nudge you to donate, and no feature depends on it.
Permissions
Murmur asks Chrome for the minimum it needs. In plain terms:
- Run on web pages: so the player, Select text and the highlight of the text being read work on the page you are reading and keep working as you move around in that tab. Murmur acts only when you ask it to.
- Active tab: to tell whether the current tab can be read when you press Read.
- Storage: for the settings above.
- Offscreen document: to play audio and run the speech engine while the popup is closed.
- System CPU and memory: only for the Performance tab.
Who sees your data
Nobody, beyond the downloads above. Murmur does not sell or transfer user data, does not use it for advertising or credit decisions, and does not use it for anything other than speaking the text you asked it to read. No person at the developer ever sees what you read.
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Children
Murmur is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children. It collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. If a change affects how your data is handled, Murmur will tell you in the extension before it takes effect.
